Before the industrial age, every suit was made by the hand of masterful tailors. It didn't matter what stature a man was, he would have his suit custom and careful constructed by those master craftsmen. But time went by, the rise of mass production helped people to quickly buy a ready-to-wear at any retail store or supermarket. While ready-made suits still dominate the market and designers brands advertisements are everywhere, more and more customers are turning their attention to custom suits and the value they contain. Custom suit are not the new trend, they are coming back, with their perfect fit and exceptional quality.

When you search for custom suits on Google, you will see the relevant term like bespoke suits or made-to-measure. What is the different? Or should you ask: What is the meaning of custom suits?

The term has a really loose definition; in short it means: "a suit made by hand of tailor". But there are hundreds of companies that provide the service but the price range from $300 to $5000 or higher, how can that be? It depends mostly on the craftsmanship or reputation of the tailor and the material is also a factor to make the price dramatically high.

Bespoke suits:
Masterful tailors, usually call their products bespoke suits, are the highest level of custom suits. Everything about their service can be described by one word "perfect". Only their apprentices help them but it's just the grunt work and the master do all the thing, even take your measurement personally.
These suits can take from 2-4 months depend on the tailor. The usual cost of a suit is always higher than $5000, this is nothing compare to what you get if you want a really unique and comfortable suit. The real drawback is, these master tailors don't go anywhere and they don't offer an online service, even if you are Prince of England, please at least make an appointment.

Made-to-measure:
On the contrary of bespoke suits, the companies which offer made-to-measure suits can be found anywhere and they all have a website. These suits are actually made to be customizable and therefore fit anyone. Most of designer suits fall in this segment. While designer brands don't care about internet selling, other online business take the chance and create their own market. Everything about these suits is ok; the style, the quality, the material are nothing special, and the price is cheap. That is the reason some firms offer a custom suit with just $200.

Custom suits:
Custom made suits or tailored suits are the one which stay in-between the two above kind. They didn't have masterful tailor but they hired a lot of skilled tailors who are going to make your suits. They will not take a pre-cut pattern and then make it fit with your measurement; they will cut the pattern for each individual client. The only problem stays in the measurement that you are going to take yourself or ask a local tailor to do it for you. They also know the issue so these companies often give you 15% fitting refund if you need to do any modification to fit in the suit. With the price range from $380 to $500, you will have a quality and comfortable suit.

Of cause, there are other variants like Indian tailors in Hong Kong, they claim to be bespoke but their price is just as low as a normal custom suit ($300-$400). In fact, they are just like local tailors at your neighborhood but they turn professional and expand their market to overseas.
